Manifesto

The image — is it that which is seen, or that without which the visible would have no boundary?

If there is no boundary, is there any form at all?

If there is no form, what then does photography claim to show?

Does it add something to the visible, or take from it everything that is not necessary?

If it takes, how do you discern the necessary from the accidental?

Can light discern? Or does it only reveal a difference that already exists?

If light only reveals, is it not a judge, rather than a creator?

And if it is a judge, what exactly does it judge in the image?

The form? Or the form’s endurance?

If a form dissolves under full clarity, was it ever a form at all?

If it was not a form, what then was being seen?

The making of an image — is it addition, or subtraction to the point at which nothing superfluous remains?

If it is subtraction, where is the boundary of that subtraction?

And who sets it — the eye, or the structure of the visible itself?

If the eye sets it, is that not arbitrariness?

If it is not arbitrariness, does it not follow that there is an inner necessity within the form?

And if there is an inner necessity, is the task not simply to discern it?

How do you discern necessary from accidental? How do you discern structure from noise?

And if you cannot discern them, how do you claim to see an image, and not merely a depiction?

What is the difference between depiction and image?

If a depiction is that which is seen, and an image is that which cannot be taken away without loss of meaning, does it not follow that an image is only that which withstands subtraction?

And if it does not withstand, what then was being seen?

And if something cannot withstand the light, does it have any right to remain within the visible?

If it has no such right, does it not follow that everything must be put to the test?

And if everything is a test, what remains, when nothing superfluous remains?

And if something remains, is that not the only thing worthy of being called an image?
